National Nutrition Month – Are You Nourishing Your Body?

March is National Nutrition Month and we are excited to join in the effort to help educate and support individuals on the importance of nourishing the body through food and lifestyle choices. Nourishing the body goes beyond just eating healthy, it also includes being physically active, managing stress, getting enough sleep, feeling productive and fulfilled.

What can you do to feel more nourished this month? Begin by increasing your awareness of what you are currently doing. Start by writing it down; what, when and why are you eating what you do and how you feel before and after you eat. Try keeping a food journal for 3-5 days, then take a look and see what your patterns are. It is only through writing things down that you can actually see where your challenges are. Do you eat only whole foods or do you eat processed foods? Are you eating enough vegetables and fruits? Are you drinking enough water.? How many cups of coffee do you drink? Take a good look at your patterns. Being aware is the first step in making changes. It is all about balance.

The right answer is different for everyone; food and lifestyles needs are unique. There are many different nutritional philosophies, but the one thing experts agree on: Eat whole foods including more vegetables and fruits and little or no processed foods. This can be challenging in a busy life but it can be done with a little thought and planning.

Don’t re-vamp everything at once. Start by making 1-2 small sustainable changes. You will be surprised at how many positive, livable changes you can make over a year. This is not a race, it is a journey. That journey can begin today. National Nutrition Month is a perfect time to start.
