3rd Quarter – Make it Work for You

commitmentFall is the time to enjoy the vibrant colors, take in the cool air, and plan the rest of your year.  It is also the time to take care of yourself.  Now is the time to think about yourself, time to examine and develop routine.  There is an energy in the air – let’s capitalize on it.  How fabulous would it be to go into 2014 and not make the same New Year’s resolutions you make every year.  The #1 New Year’s resolution is to lose weight.  Some people attach a number they must hit, others just resolve to eat healthy and exercise (more).  Why not go into the holiday season looking and feeling your best.  Once you get the momentum going, it will be easier to stay on track over the holiday parties.  You can still enjoy yourself, but it will be easier to do so in moderation.

Where to begin?  It is always good to begin with taking an honest look at what you are currently doing.  Take some time and evaluate your life and what changes you would like to incorporate.  Have you picked up any bad habits over the years?  How could you be healthier?  A good place to start is with a food journal for 5 days.  You should include 3 weekdays and the weekend.  Be honest; don’t change what you usually eat just because you are now writing it down.  Where could you make some changes:  Do you get enough vegetables?  Are you consuming high quality proteins?  How much processed foods does your week consist of?  Once you have assessed your food intake, take a look at the rest of your life.  Do you make time for exercise?  Do you get enough sleep?  Do you take time for yourself?  How do you handle the stresses of your day to day life?  Do you have family and/or friends that can support you?  These are just a few of the areas to total wellness.  Start slow; this is not about instant gratification or “being good.”  It’s about life long, sustainable changes.  Take small bites that you can manage.

Get a calendar – look at October, November and December, figure out what you need to accomplish between now and year end.  Make a plan, schedule these things in.  Now, get a piece of paper and write down you goals for Oct, Nov & Dec.  Remember, manageable goals.  Perfection is unattainable and certainly unsustainable.  This seems so simple, but it really works.

Simple things you could incorporate:

  • Keep a water bottle with you at all times – drink from it regularly
  • Add a green vegetable to at least one meal a day
  • Keep a daily log of what you are actually eating, if you have to write it down you may think twice
  • If you are not currently exercising, go for a 30 minute walk every day
  • If you are currently exercising, make consistency a priority
  • Limit or eliminate your caffeine intake
  • Start to replace processed foods in your diet with fresh foods

A healthy and happy you is the best gift you can give yourself, family and friends.  Take them along for the journey.
